Educating youth on climate change through science, art, and storytelling

SAN DIEGO

Climate Kids

Climate Kids-San Diego, the first Climate Kids project from the Climate Science Alliance, piloted the use of science activities, storytelling, and art to provide youth education on climate change in the south coast eco-region. Climate Kids-San Diego focuses on local natural resource conservation actions with an emphasis on climate change impacts to our oceans, coasts and the unique biodiversity and species of the south coast region. Through partnerships with climate scientists and qualified educators, we encourage curiosity about the natural world while providing youth the tools necessary to make educated decisions about how to protect our planet in the future.

MEXICO

Climate Kids

Climate Kids-Mexico is a collaborative partnership with Profesora Escalante, that piloted a unique approach to training high school students to deliver the Climate Kids program in elementary and middle school classes in Tijuana, Baja Mexico. The program has expanded to additional schools and partner programs across northern Baja and is having a positive impact in the community through its environmental stewardship activities, workshops, and outreach.  Since the program started Climate Kids-Mexico has reached more than 6,000 students a year with climate change science, art, and storytelling. In 2016 we launched bi-national events for students from Climate Kids-Mexico and Climate Kids-San Diego to meet and learn together. We expanded this to include Climate Kids-Tribes in 2017.

TRIBES

Climate Kids

In partnership with the Pala Band of Mission Indians, the Climate Science Alliance launched Climate Kids-Tribes in 2017. Since then the partnership has expanded to include tribes across the

Southwestern United States. Climate Kids-Tribes includes programming in schools with students from 2-18 years old. Through invitation, the Climate Science Alliance has brought Climate Kids activities to tribal earth day events, youth field trips, school programs, and other community events for the whole family.  The Alliance is grateful for the many partnerships that have allowed Climate Kids programming to reach hundreds of youth in local Tribal Nations.

AMBASSADORS

Climate Kids

The Climate Kids Ambassadors program invites students to put their lab coats back on and join Climate Science Alliance staff at community events. Students are given the opportunity to hone their skills at public speaking and share their knowledge about climate change and environmental stewardship with other students and families. Climate Kids Ambassador events are open to the whole family and offer students opportunities to share their knowledge with others and meet other Climate Kids from across the south coast including special bi-national events with Climate Kids-Mexico and Climate Kids-Tribes.

TRAVELING TRUNKS

Climate Kids

Climate Kids Traveling Trunks provide all the resources you need to teach climate science in the classroom. Each trunk includes background information, lesson plans, powerpoints, activities, and materials to increase climate literacy for K-8 youth. Our three trunks — Carnivores, Oceans, and Pollinators — feature interactive and hands-on science, storytelling and art curriculum aligned to NGSS.

YOUTH CLIMATE CHALLENGE

Climate Kids

The Climate Challenge is an immersive experience that connects students with leading climate scientists, practitioners, artists, and fellow youth. In challenge teams, students are guided and challenged to identify and analyze the climate impacts in their own communities. Together, they investigate climate strategies and solutions and formulate action plans to implement in their sphere of influence. This program serves primarily to inspire and activate youth to come together and make a difference in their community.

ART + COMMUNITY

Bridging the gap between research and application through art and artists

ART OF CHANGE

Climate Art Shows

The Climate Science Alliance sees the arts as a valuable tool for communicating and disseminating climate science to diverse audiences because it cuts across culture, age, education level, and socioeconomic status. The "Art of Change" traveling art shows bring climate art to our communities, featuring climate art from our Affiliated Artists and local youth in our Climate Kids program, as well as collaborative pieces made at community events.

AFFILIATED ARTISTS

A Team of Climate Artists

Our Affiliated Artists pursue innovative and creative opportunities to engage the public and partners on climate change topics, working with Alliance partners to share climate change adaptation expertise, tools, and lessons learned. Climate art is showcased at "Art of Change" shows and other Alliance events, including summits and workshops.

CLIMATE ART FELLOWSHIP

A Sponsored, Project-Based Fellowship for Artists

The Climate Art Fellowship brings one artist together with partners, affiliated researchers, and community leaders to help us engage with local communities on climate impacts and solutions to help make informed decisions that will enhance their resilience to climate change impacts.
